Learning systems are becoming the driver of digitization in business and society everywhere today. They permeate all areas of the working world and everyday life. Robots, assistance and software systems are already working on complex problems. The Dortmund Data Science Center (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodsc.tu-dortmund.de\/cms\/en\/home\/index.html\">DoDSc<\/a>) bundles methods from statistics, computer science and mathematics in interaction with the sciences of physics, chemistry and chemical biology as well as with journalism. This provides an umbrella within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu-dortmund.de\/en\/\">TU Dortmund University<\/a> for interdisciplinary exchange on research, teaching and transfer. This provides an excellent framework for cooperation with other universities and institutes.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) also has a long tradition at the TU Dortmund University. A corresponding chair was established as early as 1991. Even then, machine learning was recognized here as the key discipline of AI. The startup RapidMiner was born there and the system of the same name is continuously in the leading quadrant of the Gartner Group.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, capacity in AI has been built: Professorships on Pattern Recognition (Prof. Dr. Gernot A. Fink), Data Mining (Prof. Dr. Erich Schubert), Data Science and Data Engineering (Prof. Dr. Emmanuel M\u00fcller), and Smart City Science (JProf. Dr. Thomas Liebig) will soon be complemented by an endowed professorship on machine learning in industrial applications, established by KION Group AG, a provider of forklift trucks, warehouse technology and related services, and supply chain solutions. In the Faculty of Statistics, the professorships on Statistical Methods for Big Data (Prof. Dr. Andreas Groll) and the professorship on Statistics in Industrial Applications (Prof. Dr. Markus Pauly) endowed by Deutsche Post AG were filled in 2019. Appointment procedures are currently underway for the professorships of Artificial Intelligence (successor Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik) and Computational Statistics (successor Prof. Dr. Claus Weihs).<\/p>\n<p>In the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.tu-dortmund.de\/nps\/de\/Forschung\/Verbundprojekte\/SFB_876\/index.html#:~:text=SFB%20876%3A%20Verf%C3%BCgbarkeit%20von%20Information%20durch%20Analyse%20unter%20Ressourcenbeschr%C3%A4nkung&amp;text=Das%20Gebiet%20der%20eingebetteten%20Systeme,%2C%20Biomedizin%2C%20Physik%20und%20Maschinenbau.\"> Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 876 <\/a>&#8222;Availability of Information through Analysis under Resource Constraints&#8220; brings together Big Data, machine learning and embedded systems. This innovative connection opens up possibilities for real-time processes, such as in firefighting or autonomous sensor-actuator systems. The center, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is one of six nationwide centers for cutting-edge research and transfer in the field of artificial intelligence. Cooperation partners are the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in Sankt Augustin, the University of Bonn and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund. Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, head of the Chair of Artificial Intelligence at TU Dortmund University, also coordinates all six centers. Here, AI methods and applications are considered both from the perspective of the methodological-theoretical fundamentals and from the perspective of application in the most diverse subject areas. Accordingly, the topic of AI is also taken up at various departments.<\/p>\n<p>At the Department of Computer Science, AI is represented by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Bab, Prof. Dr. Britta B\u00f6ckmann, Prof. Dr. Christoph Friedrich and Prof. Dr. Sabine Sachweh. Prof. Dr. Bab (Chair of Applied Logics and Artificial Intelligence) is especially dedicated to classical, symbolic AI and its relation to logic up to the topics of machine learning and natural language processing. Prof. Dr. B\u00f6ckmann and Prof. Dr. Friedrich are dedicated to the application of AI and machine learning methods in the field of (bio)medical informatics, among others in the DFG-funded research training group WisPerMed. Prof. Dr. Sachweh at the Institute for the Digitization of Work and Living Environments (IDiAL) also considers ethical aspects of the application of AI in particular.<\/p>\n<p>At the Department of Information Technology, AI is represented in the profile focus Intelligent Information and Communication Systems and at the Institute of Communication Technology by Prof. Dr. Ingo Kunold (Communication Technology and Digital Signal Processing) and Prof. Dr. Hendrik W\u00f6hrle (Intelligent Autonomous Sensor and Actuator Systems). AI methods and technologies are considered in particular in the context of communication technology and the Internet of Things with the areas of Smart Systems, Smart Energy and Smart Homes\/-Buildings and Cities. Another focus is the use and application of real-time AI technologies on embedded systems and the development of efficient hardware for machine learning. Prof. Dr. J\u00f6rg Thiem and Prof. Dr. Andreas Becker deal with the use of AI in robotics and automotive. Another research area is the application of AI in the field of biomedical engineering, which is represented by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Zaunseder and Natalie Mrachacz-Kersting.<\/p>\n<p>In the Department of Electrical Engineering, the teaching area of Prof. Dr. Kai Luppa is software development, energy automation and network management. Here, among other things, work is done on the topics of data analysis and AI for future control systems in the energy industry. Efficient microelectronic systems for AI and sensor data analysis using machine learning methods are developed by Prof. Dr. Michael Karagounis. In addition to the technical aspects of AI, societal impacts are also playing an increasingly important role. These include the BMBF-funded competence center &#8222;Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr&#8220; (ML2R, see above) and the research project &#8222;ai arena&#8220; for the establishment of a practice-oriented AI laboratory for interdisciplinary and collaborative research on machine learning for robot swarms, the BMVI-funded project on the Silicon Economy, which aims to establish an infrastructure for AI-driven autonomous systems and processes of tomorrow&#8217;s logistics, the BMWi-funded Mittelstand 4. 0 competence center &#8222;Digital in NRW&#8220;, which transfers AI know-how to SMEs by means of AI trainers, and the logistics and IT performance center funded by the MKW NRW, which connects Dortmund AI researchers in its &#8222;Machine Learning Research Clan&#8220; in a cross-institutional and purpose-oriented manner. Fraunhofer IML cooperates intensively with local research partners in the fields of AI \/ data science and logistics (TU Dortmund University, chairs of the faculties of mechanical engineering, computer science, statistics, electrical engineering and information technology; IfADo; Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy) as well as international institutions (e.g. TNO, TKI DINALOG, Georgia Tech Atlanta).<\/p>\n<p>AI research at Fraunhofer IML is also broadly positioned in the area of industrial contract research &#8211; from research and training of autonomous systems in general (e.g. by means of reinforcement learning) and the development of autonomous transport robots such as LoadRunner\u00ae in particular, to diverse tasks in the area of computer vision (e.g. for counting or (quality) control). Lernende Systeme werden heute \u00fcberall zum Treiber der Digitalisierung in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft. Sie durchdringen s\u00e4mtliche Bereiche in Arbeitswelt und Alltag. Bereits heute bearbeiten Roboter, Assistenz- und Softwaresysteme komplexe Probleme. In Dortmund forschen Wissenschaftler*innen sowohl an technischen Verbesserungen und Algorithmen, um z.B. Das Dortmund Data Science Center (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dodsc.tu-dortmund.de\/cms\/de\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DoDSc<\/a>) b\u00fcndelt Methoden aus Statistik, Informatik, Mathematik in Interaktion mit den Wissenschaften Physik, Chemie und Chemische Biologie sowie mit der Journalistik. So ist innerhalb der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tu-dortmund.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TU Dortmund<\/a> ein Dach gegeben f\u00fcr den interdisziplin\u00e4ren Austausch zu Forschung, Lehre und Transfer. F\u00fcr die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Hochschulen und Instituten bietet sich hier ein hervorragend geeigneter Rahmen.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Auch die K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz (KI) hat Tradition an der TU Dortmund. Schon 1991 wurde ein entsprechender Lehrstuhl eingerichtet. Bereits damals wurde hier das maschinelle Lernen als die Schl\u00fcsseldisziplin der KI erkannt. Das Startup RapidMiner ist dort entstanden und das gleichnamige System ist fortw\u00e4hrend im f\u00fchrenden Quadranten der Gartner Group.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Inzwischen wurde die Kapazit\u00e4t im Bereich der KI ausgebaut: Professuren zur Mustererkennung (Prof. Dr. Gernot A. Fink), Data Mining (Prof. Dr. Erich Schubert), Data Science and Data Engineering (Prof. Dr. Emmanuel M\u00fcller), sowie Smart City Science (JProf. Dr. Thomas Liebig) werden demn\u00e4chst durch eine Stiftungsprofessur zu maschinellem Lernen in industriellen Anwendungen erg\u00e4nzt, die von der KION Group AG, einem Anbieter von Gabelstablern, Lagertechnik und verbundenen Dienstleistungen sowie Lieferketten-L\u00f6sungen, eingerichtet wird. In der Fakult\u00e4t f\u00fcr Statistik wurden 2019 die Professuren zu Statistischen Methoden f\u00fcr Big Data (Prof. Dr. Andreas Groll) sowie die von der Deutschen Post AG gestiftete Professur zu Statistik in industriellen Anwendungen (Prof. Dr. Markus Pauly) besetzt. F\u00fcr die Professuren f\u00fcr K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz (Nachfolge Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik) sowie Computergest\u00fctzte Statistik (Nachfolge Prof. Dr. Claus Weihs) laufen aktuell Berufungsverfahren.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Im <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.tu-dortmund.de\/nps\/de\/Forschung\/Verbundprojekte\/SFB_876\/index.html#:~:text=SFB%20876%3A%20Verf%C3%BCgbarkeit%20von%20Information%20durch%20Analyse%20unter%20Ressourcenbeschr%C3%A4nkung&text=Das%20Gebiet%20der%20eingebetteten%20Systeme,%2C%20Biomedizin%2C%20Physik%20und%20Maschinenbau.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Sonderforschungsbereichen (SFB) 876<\/b><\/a> \u201eVerf\u00fcgbarkeit von Information durch Analyse unter Ressourcenbeschr\u00e4nkung\u201c bringt Big Data, maschinelles Lernen und eingebettete Systeme zusammen. Dieser innovative Zusammenhang er\u00f6ffnet M\u00f6glichkeiten f\u00fcr die realzeitlichen Prozesse, wie z.B. bei der Feuerwehr oder autonomen Sensor-Aktorsystemen. Das Zentrum, das vom Bundesministerium f\u00fcr Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gef\u00f6rdert wird, ist eines von sechs bundesweiten Zentren f\u00fcr Spitzenforschung und Transfer im Bereich der K\u00fcnstlichen Intelligenz. Kooperationspartner sind das Fraunhofer-Institut f\u00fcr Intelligente Analyse- und Informationssysteme IAIS in Sankt Augustin, die Universit\u00e4t Bonn sowie das Fraunhofer-Institut f\u00fcr Materialfluss und Logistik IML in Dortmund. Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, Leiterin des Lehrstuhls f\u00fcr K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz an der TU Dortmund, koordiniert zudem alle sechs Zentren. Hierbei werden KI-Methoden und -Anwendungen sowohl aus dem Blickwinkel der methodisch-theoretischen Grundlagen betrachtet als auch aus dem Blickwinkel der Anwendung in den verschiedensten Themenfeldern. Dementsprechend wird das Thema KI auch an verschiedenen Fachbereichen aufgegriffen.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Am <i>Fachbereich Informatik<\/i> wird KI von Prof. Dr. Sebastian Bab, Prof. Dr. Britta B\u00f6ckmann, Prof. Dr. Christoph Friedrich und Prof. Dr. Sabine Sachweh vertreten. Prof. Dr. Bab (Lehrgebiet Angewandte Logiken und K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz) widmet sich dabei insbesondere der klassischen, symbolischen KI und deren Bezug zur Logik bis hin zu den Themen des maschinellen Lernens und des Natural Language Processings. Prof. Dr. B\u00f6ckmann und Prof. Dr. Friedrich widmen sich der Anwendung von KI und maschinellen Lernverfahren im Bereich der (Bio-)Medizinischen Informatik, u.a. im DFG-gef\u00f6rderten Graduiertenkolleg WisPerMed. Prof. Dr. Sachweh betrachtet am Institut f\u00fcr die Digitalisierung von Arbeits- und Lebenswelten (IDiAL) insbesondere auch ethische Aspekte der Anwendung von KI.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Am <i>Fachbereich Informationstechnik<\/i> wird KI im Profilschwerpunkt Intelligente Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme und am Institut f\u00fcr Kommunikationstechnik von Prof. Dr. Ingo Kunold (Kommunikationstechnik und digitale Signalverarbeitung) und Prof. Dr. Hendrik W\u00f6hrle (Intelligente autonome Sensor- und Aktor-Systeme) vertreten. KI-Methoden und -Technologien werden dabei insbesondere im Kontext der Kommunikationstechnik und des Internets der Dinge mit den Bereichen Smart Systems, Smart Energy und Smart Homes\/-Buildings und Cities betrachtet. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt bildet die Nutzung und Anwendung von realzeitlichen KI-Technologien auf Embedded Systems und die Entwicklung von effizienter Hardware f\u00fcr das maschinelle Lernen. Prof. Dr. J\u00f6rg Thiem und Prof. Dr. Andreas Becker besch\u00e4ftigen sich mit der Nutzung von KI in den Bereichen Robotik und Automotive. Ein weiterer Forschungsbereich ist die Anwendung von KI im Bereich der Biomedizintechnik, welcher von Prof. Dr. Sebastian Zaunseder und Natalie Mrachacz-Kersting vertreten wird.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Im <i>Fachbereich Elektrotechnik<\/i> ist das Lehrgebiet von Prof. Dr. Kai Luppa die Softwareentwicklung, Energieautomatisierung und Netzf\u00fchrung. Hier wird unter anderem an den Themen Datenanalyse und KI f\u00fcr zuk\u00fcnftige Steuerungssysteme in der Energiewirtschaft gearbeitet. Effiziente mikroelektronische Systeme f\u00fcr KI und Sensordatenanalyse mittels maschineller Lernverfahren werden von Prof. Dr. Michael Karagounis entwickelt. Neben den technischen Aspekten von KI spielen auch gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen eine zunehmend wichtigere Rolle. Hierzu z\u00e4hlen unter anderem das vom BMBF gef\u00f6rderte Kompetenzzentrum \u201eMaschinelles Lernen Rhein-Ruhr\u201c (ML2R, s. o.) und das Forschungsprojekt \u201eai arena\u201c zum Aufbau eines praxisorientierten KI-Labors f\u00fcr die interdisziplin\u00e4re und kollaborative Forschung zu Machine Learning f\u00fcr Roboterschw\u00e4rme, das vom BMVI gef\u00f6rderte Projekt zur Silicon Economy, welches darauf abzielt, eine Infrastruktur f\u00fcr durch KI-gesteuerte autonome Systeme und Prozesse der Logistik von morgen aufzubauen, das durch das BMWi gef\u00f6rderte Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum \u201eDigital in NRW\u201c, welches u. a. mittels KI-Trainern KI-Know-how in KMU transferiert und das vom MKW NRW gef\u00f6rderte Leistungszentrum Logistik und IT, welches in seinem \u201eResearch Clan Maschinelles Lernen\u201c Dortmunder KI-Forscher*innen institutions\u00fcbergreifend und zweckorientiert verbindet. Hierbei kooperiert das Fraunhofer IML jeweils intensiv mit lokalen Forschungspartner*innen der Kompetenzfelder KI \/ Data Science sowie Logistik (TU Dortmund, Lehrst\u00fchle der Fakult\u00e4ten Maschinenbau, Informatik, Statistik, Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik; IfADo; Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Sicherheit und Schutz der Privatsph\u00e4re) als auch internationalen Einrichtungen (z.B.
