[&#8230;] As a scientific discipline, logistics is still quite young, but it has nevertheless become the innovation driver of the economy in important fields in recent years.&#8220; (Evaluation Report of the Expert Commission chaired by Prof. Manfred Prenzel 2018, p. 67)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Logistics is the driving force behind Industry 4.0 or a Social Networked Industry. Logistics is the foundation of global trade. It connects places and companies in global networks \u2013 \u00a0from the physical flow of materials and goods to the exchange of data and the flow of finance in logistics management. More than any other industry, it is highly standardized and predestined for the overarching use of platforms, blockchains, and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques because it is completely &#8222;algorithmizable&#8220;. AI-equipped technology such as intelligent containers and pallets that negotiate autonomously and route and pay themselves to the recipient, or swarms of autonomous vehicles in factories and logistics locations, exemplify how value chains will function in the future. Beyond the visible, digitization will permeate all of logistics, from individual subprocesses to global value networks.<\/p>\n<p>Digital platforms and their AI are crucial in this process. Under the target image (&#8222;big picture&#8220;) of a &#8222;Silicon Economy&#8220; \u2013 \u00a0the complete virtualization of value networks \u2013 open, federated and implementation-strong consortia from business and science have been gathering since spring 2020, in which technologies, de facto standards and new business models are quickly being brought together and developed (open source). This provides the basis for the economic use of AI solutions with new services, technologies and applications in logistics and supply chain management and enables decisive participation for German SMEs. Only if Germany succeeds in playing a significant and active role in a logistics data and platform economy will this all-important development follow our social norms and goals and the German AI aspiration become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>The Expert Commission for the Evaluation of the Science Master Plan 1.0 attested to the scientific competence field of logistics in the evaluation report as early as 2018 that it is actively and leadingly shaping the scientific discipline of logistics and &#8222;[&#8230;] is to be regarded as a leading logistics research cluster nationally and internationally due to its size, integrative approach and orientation&#8220; (ibid., p. 68). In this respect, it is only logical that the scientific competence field of logistics gives itself a coherent thematic focus of work with this target image of the &#8222;Silicon Economy&#8220;. There is also close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institutes IML and ISST.<\/p>\n<p>In the next few years, the logistics competence field will be even more closely interlinked with the new scientific competence field of <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/en\/artificial-intelligence\/?lang=en\">artificial intelligence<\/a>. Fraunhofer IML is already a partner of the competence center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ml2r.de\/en\/landingpage\/\">ML2R<\/a>&#8222;, which is involved in the scientific competence field AI. In addition, an intensification of the exchange with the scientific fields of competence <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/en\/produciton-technology\/?lang=en\">production technology<\/a> and energy is planned and with the new field of competence on <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/en\/demographic-change\/?lang=en\">demographic change<\/a>. The competence field would like to continuously adapt and proactively develop the orientation of the thematic focus with the involvement of all stakeholders in this competence field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goal 2:<\/strong> Strengthening scientific networking both within the competence field (at the &#8222;Dortmund level&#8220;) and regionally, nationally and internationally is seen as an essential prerequisite for an active role in the scientific community, in addition to the formation of a professional focus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goal 3:<\/strong> In order to further consolidate the embedding in the national and international research landscape of the competence field, the international visibility must be pursued even more strongly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goal 4:<\/strong> Not only the position in the scientific community, but also the recognition by industry through application orientation and innovation transfer define success and are thus a goal of the scientific competence field of logistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Derived from these goals, the scientific competence field logistics has defined three project approaches for the Science Master Plan 2.0, which will bundle the many existing individual activities and initiate new joint activities:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li>Dortmund Logistics Program<\/li>\n<li>Science communication and cooperation<\/li>\n<li>Innovation transfer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Fraunhofer Institute IML plays a central role in the continuation of the competence field in the Science Master Plan 2.0. Therefore, an expansion of the institute is aspired in the near future in order to guarantee the successful development of the last decades in the future and to continue to secure the current location advantage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8220;4.16&#8243; Logistik ist die Grundlage des Welthandels. Sie verbindet Orte und Unternehmen in globalen Netzwerken \u2013 angefangen beim physischen Material- und Warenfluss \u00fcber den Austausch von Daten bis hin zum Finanzfluss im logistischen Management. Wie keine andere Branche ist sie hochgradig standardisiert und f\u00fcr den \u00fcbergreifenden Einsatz von Plattformen, Blockchains und Verfahren K\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz (KI) pr\u00e4destiniert, da sie komplett \u201ealgorithmierbar\u201c ist. Mit KI ausgestattete Technik wie intelligente Container und Paletten, die autonom verhandeln und sich selbst zum Empf\u00e4nger routen und bezahlen, oder Schw\u00e4rme autonomer Fahrzeuge in den Fabriken und Logistikstandorten zeigen beispielhaft, wie Wertsch\u00f6pfungsketten in Zukunft funktionieren. Die Digitalisierung wird abseits des Sichtbaren die gesamte Logistik vom einzelnen Teilprozess bis hin zu globalen Wertsch\u00f6pfungsnetzwerken durchdringen.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Digitale Plattformen und ihre KI sind dabei entscheidend. Unter dem Zielbild (\u201eBig Picture\u201c) einer \u201eSilicon Economy\u201c \u2013 der vollst\u00e4ndigen Virtualisierung von Wertsch\u00f6pfungsnetzwerken \u2013 versammeln sich seit Fr\u00fchjahr 2020 offene, f\u00f6derale und umsetzungsstarke Konsortien aus Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, in denen Technologien, de facto-Standards und neue Gesch\u00e4ftsmodelle schnell zusammengef\u00fchrt und Open Source entwickelt werden. Dies stellt die Grundlage f\u00fcr eine wirtschaftliche Nutzung von KI-L\u00f6sungen mit neuen Services, Technologien und Anwendungen in Logistik und Supply Chain Management dar und erm\u00f6glicht die entscheidende Teilhabe f\u00fcr den deutschen Mittelstand. Nur wenn es am Standort Deutschland gelingt, eine wesentliche und aktive Rolle in einer logistischen Daten- und Plattform\u00f6konomie zu spielen, wird diese alles entscheidende Entwicklung unseren gesellschaftlichen Normen und Zielen folgen und der deutsche KI-Anspruch Wirklichkeit.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Die Expertenkommission zur Evaluation des Masterplans Wissenschaft 1.0 attestierte dem wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzfeld Logistik im Evaluationsbericht bereits im Jahr 2018, dass es aktiv und f\u00fchrend die Wissenschaftsdisziplin Logistik gestaltet und \u201e[\u2026] aufgrund seiner Gr\u00f6\u00dfe, seines integrativen Ansatzes und seiner Ausrichtung national und international als f\u00fchrendes Forschungscluster der Logistik anzusehen ist\u201c (ebd., S. 68). Insofern ist es nur konsequent, dass das wissenschaftliche Kompetenzfeld Logistik sich mit diesem Zielbild der \u201eSilicon Economy\u201c einen koh\u00e4renten thematischen Arbeitsschwerpunkt gibt. Ebenso gibt es eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Fraunhofer-Instituten IML und ISST.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In den n\u00e4chsten Jahren soll das Kompetenzfeld Logistik noch st\u00e4rker mit dem neuen wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzfeld <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/kuenstliche-intelligenz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz<\/a> verzahnt werden. Das Fraunhofer IML ist bereits Partner des Kompetenzzentrums Maschinelles Lernen Rhein-Ruhr \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ml2r.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ML2R<\/a>\u201c, das im wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzfeld KI mitwirkt. Zudem ist eine Intensivierung des Austauschs mit den wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzfeldern <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/produktionstechnik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Produktionstechnik<\/a> und <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/energie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Energie<\/a> vorgesehen und mit dem neuen Kompetenzfeld <a href=\"https:\/\/masterplan-wissenschaft.de\/demografischer-wandel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demografischer Wandel<\/a> geplant.
